ASTON MARTIN VANQUISH S - £Auction

One of the very first cars this century to be christened a 'modern classic', the Vanquish is beloved by modern day enthusiasts and heritage collectors alike. The wonderfully sculpted bodywork was penned by legendary designer Ian Callum, who drew inspiration from Aston Martin's DB4 GT Zagato - one of the most beautiful cars produced by the British marque, or any for that matter. For many, Aston hasn't since produced a car prettier than the Vanquish, but we'll leave that up to you to decide.

The Vanquish's bonded aluminium chassis, combined with traditional craftsmanship, ushered in a new era for Aston Martin. Underneath the bonnet is a 460bhp V12 engine delivering power through a six-speed automated manual gearbox. (Aston later offered to replace the controversial gearbox with a more conventional manual alternative, at great expense.) A total of 1,086 Vanquish S models were manufactured between 2005 and 2007 following the car's debut at the 2004 Paris Motor Show. Aston's engineers increased the power over the standard Vanquish from 460bhp to 520bhp, and with a top speed exceeding 200mph, the Vanquish S was, at the time, the fastest production Aston Martin ever produced. Discreet visual changes to the 'S' included a bigger, revised grille, front splitter and a raised rear 'spoiler' built into the boot lid to keep the car stable at high speed.

This example is likely to be one of the best Vanquishes you can find. Having covered a remarkable 6,675 miles from new, it is almost box-fresh and has been kept in a garage for much of its life; certainly for the ten years our vendor has owned it. Beyond his meticulous care of the car at his own premises, our vendor has spared no expense on the car, leaving it in the capable hands of Aston Martin Works for servicing - a more than worthwhile expense, as any Aston owner will attest. In addition to its marvellous mileage and service history, this Vanquish was sent back to Aston Martin Works for the most desirable of upgrades: the manual gearbox. Only around 100 examples have had this treatment, which apparently cost upwards of £20,000 but is a marked improvement over the somewhat cumbersome automated manual box. The manual makes the Vanquish the car it was always meant to be; a beautifully brutish British grand tourer, the kind only Aston Martin can produce and an utterly thrilling driving experience. Consigned by Charlie McCreery.
