JAGUAR XJ-S 5.3-LITRE V12 - £Auction

This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at the NEC Classic Motor Show 2025 on Saturday the 8th of November, NEC, Birmingham, B40 1NT. Conceived as a refined and long-legged Grand Routier rather than an out and out sports car like the preceding E-Type, the Jaguar XJ-S was a car engineered for effortless high speed touring. Built on the proven XJ saloon platform but with a shortened wheelbase and revised suspension geometry, it offered exceptional comfort and composure at speed. The model first appeared as a V12-powered Coupé in 1975, but it wasn’t until 1988 that Jaguar finally unveiled a true factory Convertible. This open-top variant, developed in-house and featuring an exceptionally robust folding roof mechanism, represented the XJ-S in its purest and most elegant form. So durable was the convertible structure that Aston Martin later adopted it for use in the DB7 Volante. The car was powered by Jaguar’s smooth and sonorous 5.3-litre HE (High Efficiency) V12, producing around 295bhp and 318lb/ft of torque. Mated to a silky 3-speed automatic transmission, it provided a refined yet effortless driving experience, capable of covering vast distances with composure and ease. Power-assisted steering, ventilated disc brakes, and fully independent suspension made the XJ-S a consummate grand tourer, while its distinctive styling and luxurious interior ensured it retained the sense of occasion expected of a flagship Jaguar. Presented here is a truly exceptional example, a 1989 Jaguar XJ-S 5.3-litre Convertible finished in striking Signal Red over Biscuit leather with red piping. Having covered just 9,800 miles from new, this car remains in time-warp condition throughout. The paintwork, chrome, and brightwork present superbly, while the interior is virtually as it left Browns Lane, the leather seats displaying only the lightest signs of use and the wood veneers retaining their factory lustre. There are a couple of minor stonechips as are to be expected, but overall the car presents very well indeed. Supplied new in 1989, the Jaguar remained with its original owner for nearly three decades, from 1989 until 2018, before joining our vendor’s carefully curated collection making it a genuine two owner car, an increasingly rare distinction among surviving examples. Its current presentation reflects the meticulous care it has received from both custodians, having clearly spent its life cherished and properly stored. The car is accompanied by a lovely history file with documentation dating back to new. Included are the original Bill of Sale, invoices for servicing and maintenance, old MOT Certificates and Tax Discs, as well as all Jaguar handbooks and manuals. The paperwork substantiates both the indicated mileage and the extraordinary level of preservation this car enjoys. Mechanically, it remains in excellent order, starting and running exactly as one would expect of a low-mileage, well-maintained V12. Our vendor notes that the car is in 'as-new' condition inside, outside and mechanically, having required no remedial work beyond regular fluid changes and gentle exercise. In today’s market, finding an unrestored, two owner XJ-S Convertible with under 10,000 miles from new is almost unheard of. Beautifully original, fabulously presented and still retaining all its factory charm, this is without question one of the finest examples of Jaguar’s iconic grand tourer to come to market in recent years.
