Background:The Land Rover Dormobile was one of the earliest and most distinctive 4x4 campervans, offering rugged off-road ability combined with practical touring accommodation. Converted by Martin Walter Ltd of Folkestone, these factory-approved conversions featured folding seats, bunks, and a pop-up roof, allowing adventurers to travel almost anywhere in comfort. Retaining the charm and capability of the standard Series 2 Land Rover, the Dormobile added a unique versatility that made it a favourite among explorers and enthusiasts alike. The Car:This 1970 Land Rover Series 2 Dormobile has been comprehensively rebuilt on a galvanised chassis, which has since been Waxoyled black to preserve its appearance. Body repairs have been completed where necessary, maintaining presentable exterior. Mechanical enhancements include parabolic springs for improved ride comfort, freewheel hubs, a Fairey overdrive and a front disc brake conversion. Power is provided by a Steve Parker engine conversion, utilising the robust LDV 400 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine derived from Peugeot. Known for its reliability and torque, this engine suits the Land Rover’s character well and has been neatly installed. The vehicle runs and drives very well and is significantly more usable for daily driving than a typical Series 2 thanks to the thoughtful upgrades. Externally, the Land Rover is equipped with four side steps and a set of Wolf rims, lending a purposeful and classic appearance.
