MASERATI BI TURBO SPYDER - £Auction
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at the NEC Classic Motor Show 2025 on Saturday the 8th of November, NEC, Birmingham, B40 1NT. Alejandro de Tomaso had a bold vision for Maserati when he acquired the ailing manufacturer in 1976, with a strategy focussing on a more affordable sports car range called Biturbo. As implied, the Biturbo had a twin-turbocharged V6 engine of Maserati's own design, and in 1984 Zagato was commissioned to develop a Spyder variant. The wheelbase was shortened by some 114mm to create a strict two-seater with compact proportions, and with a manual transmission and endless torque from the world's first production twin turbocharged engine, the Spyder lived up to the famous trident badge. Today, the Biturbo Spyder is a tasteful under-the-radar alternative for those wanting a high performance modern classic roadster. Finished in Maserati Rosso Red with Beige Nuvalato hide, this particular Biturbo was supplied new on 3rd November 1988 by appointed agents Grayshott Motor Company in Hindhead to its first owner residing in Guildford, specified with the optional Lattice Spoke alloy wheels adding the final touch to this outstanding Spyder. He obviously enjoyed the Maserati as he retained the car for 14 years until 2002 although it was used sparingly as part of his collection. It was clearly well maintained during that period illustrated by its interesting history file containing an MOT trace backing up the incredibly low mileage which, at time of viewing, was just 2,672. With a change of ownership in 2002, the Maserati moved to another private collection, residing for some 13 years in Marbella and again maintained as required to ensure that it was on the button should the decision be made to enjoy an impromptu trip to the golf club. It should also be noted at this time that the car was never registered in Spain and is still recorded on the DVLA register as having had no former keepers. Returning to the UK in 2024, the Maserati was subject to a full health check by marque specialists, with all belts replaced along with a general recommissioning of all components where deemed necessary before being placed within another private collection and used sparingly, once again retaining the exceptionally low recorded mileage. The Biturbo Spyder is a quick, stylish and very affordable Latin 'junior' supercar that will, with proper maintenance, provide many years of reliable and immensely rewarding driving. Such is the rarity of this beautiful example, bearing in mind the exceptionally low mileage, we strongly recommend your early inspection at the NEC to fully appreciate the opportunity on offer.
