1972 MGB GT "BARNFIND" - £1,495

Quite possibly the best known small British sportscar of all time, the MGB was first introduced in 1964 – in Roadster form – and production continued until 1980, by which time over half a million (of all variants) had been produced. The car still has a large following to this day and a good support network through specialist suppliers and an owners club. Limited changes were made to the car prior to the substantial revision to its appearance from the 1974 model year, when the original chrome bumpers were replaced with new, steel-reinforced black rubber bumpers front and rear, to meet new US impact regulations. Throughout the model’s life, the 1800cc engine was rated at 95 bhp peak power at 5,400 rpm, with a 6,000 rpm redline. In 1968 the gearbox was uprated to offer full synchromesh on all 4 gears. This gave performance figures of a top speed around 105 mph, and a 0-60 mph time of around 12 seconds. This ‘chrome bumper’ GT dates from 1972, having been registered new in Jersey in February of that year. The last owner acquired the vehicle in 1994 but ran it for just a few years before garaging it in 2000. It has not been used since and was only brought out of its long-term hibernation earlier this year. Running fine before being parked up in 2000, the MGB is currently a non-runner and would need full mechanical re-commissioning. As might be anticipated after a couple of decades, the bodywork shows signs of considerable decay in most of the usual places – sills, door bottoms, valances etc. The underside of the car however, is pretty solid with largely just surface corrosion. Given its long-term lack of use, the interior is intact and in surprisingly good condition. It does not appear to have suffered any rodent damage, although the seats have some mildew marks. A period cassette player is fitted, as is an aftermarket Mountney-style alloy steering wheel. An original and unmolested MGB GT that has been laid up for many years. This ‘barnfind’ vehicle is however very complete and will make a good candidate for a full restoration. The car is currently Jersey registered. We can assist with shipping and importation processes if required.
