For some drivers, a coupé is too closed, a cabriolet too open: that is where the 993 Targa manages to provide the perfect solution for Porsche drivers. The 1996 production year saw the debut of the so-called "greenhouse" system: a large retractable glass roof. The new glass roof design allowed the 993 Targa to retain the same side profile as the other 911 Carrera. The 993 Targa made the drive to work feel like a holiday. The 993 was the first generation of the 911 to have a 6-speed manual transmission included as standard. In almost every situation, it was possible to keep the engine at its best torque range above 4,500 rpm. The 911’s horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine is located at the rear, putting the weight of the engine on the driven wheels which aids considerably in increasing traction. The exceptional reliability and usability are down to Porsche’s constant use of Motorsport as a proving ground and development platform for the components of its road cars. For the 993 to achieve maximum performance and a generous spread of torque, cylinder charging was further optimised by adding variable length inlet tracts to the two-stage tuned intake system. This was known as Varioram, and boosted torque at low and medium engine speeds, making torque more progressive, whilst at the same time ensuring maximum performance at peak revs. The engine produces 285 HP at 6,100 rpm, maximum torque is 340 Nm at 5,250 rpm. 0-62 mph takes just 5.3 seconds. The 993 has a hydraulic dual circuit braking system with 4-piston aluminium fixed callipers. All brakes are cross drilled, ensuring optimal braking even in wet conditions. Supplied new by Lancaster Bow Porsche, London in June 1997, the vehicle is complete with a detailed service history file documenting the service visits. The file includes its original leather book pack, service invoices and original paperwork and spare key. New N rated Michelin tyre set fitted. A comprehensive 12-month warranty will also be included. Available to view now at our London showrooms.
